TerrainThe South Downs Way is characterised by rolling chalk grassland, deep dry valleys, and extensive views over the Weald to the north and the sea to the south. The course is a mixture of bridle ways, fields, tracks, roads and paths. The trail is marked by a series of wooden ‘South Down Way’ signs and votwo will be putting a few other helpful signs up. Water proof course maps are issued. Navigation remains the responsibility of the participant.
The western end of the South Downs Way is at the historic and well preserved city of Winchester. In Hampshire the landscape is a rolling countryside of mixed farming and small woodlands. Further west the South Downs Way follows the scarp across West Sussex, often wooded closer to the Hampshire border but more and more open - classic Downland - as East Sussex nears. The Downs are cut by the major river valleys of the Ouse, Adur, and Arun and there are numerous attractive villages along the foot of the downland slope. The Trail follows a route that has been used since the end of the Ice Age. At the far eastern end of the route the footpath follows the spectacular chalk cliffs of Seven Sisters and Beachy Head.
FacilitiesEvery SDWC starter receives a free event T-shirt and every finisher receives a classic challenge trophy. Monday morning proof to your work colleagues or family that you completed the toughest 3 day votwo challenge!
The votwo team are providing the support package that will include the following -
Event HQ : This will act as a meeting point, catering area, massage/first aid point and reception. This will be open throughout the whole event to answer any questions, sell you some event merchandise or offer you some running advice.
Check points (CPs): These are located approximately every 8 miles. At each CP you will be ‘checked’ in by the CP staff and your time logged. This means we know where you are on the course and if you are late for a check point we can assist you. All the CPs will be stocked with energy bars, jelly babies, salty snacks, filled rolls, water, squash, coke and hot drinks. At the finish point each day a bowl of hot homemade soup and bread roll will await you. CP locations are marked on your issued maps and CP close time will be issued to you along with your actions on emergency card. The event medics will be available at the CP.
Transportation: Each day you will be instructed to meet at the event base and then be transported to the start. Once you join votwo on the event you can leave your car in one place and take advantage of the votwo mini buses. On completion of the days run you will be transported back to the event base.
Medical assistance: The whole route is covered by our medical support and evacuation plan. Every morning at race registration the medics will be available to sort out any blisters, tape feet up and re-attach severed limbs etc. The votwo physiotherapists will also be available at the end of each day to advise on dealing with strains and injuries.
Route maps. These are waterproofed and issued to you at race registration.
Further event details and instructions will be linked from the right hand side of this page approx 1 month weeks before the event. You must make sure you read and understand the further instructions.
AccommodationThe accommodation package is £25 per head per night. This gives full use of the campsite and its facilities and includes all your food. You must supply your own tent, sleeping bag etc. Votwo have hired a specialist outdoor events cater to provide 1st class meals. Evening meals, cooked breakfast, teas, coffees and cakes all included. All you have to do is put your own tent up!
If camping is not for you and you want to stay in a hotel (even though it is the summer!) then you can still join us for your evening meal and breakfast at £15 per day. Meal tickets can be brought online when you enter the event or from the daily event registration. The campsite has a large campfire area which will be put to good use each evening.
Team/RelayRun the challenge as a relay team of 2. 1 team member runs to the 1st check point and hands over to the 2nd team member. The votwo mini buses will leap frog the resting runner to the next check point. Approx 17 miles of running per team member per day.
CategoriesG1: Walkers. This group is for people who intend to walk the whole route. Walkers will probably be dressed in walking boots, trousers and be wearing water proof jacket. If you are wearing running shoes, shorts and vest then this is not the group for you. Walkers will have to push themselves to achieve the check point cut off times but the challenge is certainly achievable (do not enter this group if you intended to do any running on the course). Please be warned that walkers will be starting early each morning.
G2: Walkers / joggers. This group is for people who want to run a bit of the course but also want to have a nice relaxing walk as well. This is the group for you if you where thinking of starting in the walking group then doing some running!
G3: Jogger/runners. For people whole intend to attempt to run the whole course but will probably end up jogging and walking just a little bit faster than G2!
Please choose which group you are suited to when you enter online. You will be able to change groups after the first day by reporting to the event reception in the evening. It is not acceptable to enter the walking group and then run. If you do votwo cannot guarantee that check points will be open in time for you. Failure to register at a check point results in disqualification from the event.
Groups will be set off at different times. The ‘Final instructions’ document will give further detail.
Results placing will be given for the group you start in. You will not be classed as getting a 'running' result on the final placing list if you started with the walking group.
