VO2 max is one of the gold standards in testing fitness. A high value is almost certainly a pre requisite for success in international endurance sports. The test measures the maximum amount of oxygen that can be consumed by the body per minute of exercise. It can be directly measured by analysis of inhaled and exhaled air. It can also be estimated from what is called a 'sub maximal' assessment where heart rate readings are extrapolated from a lower level test as 'maxing out' is not always appropriate or necessary.
